The previous two postings (Pharma Part I and Pharma Part II) have explored the pharmaceutical industry in Texas in general and in the state’s corrections system in particular. This posting covers the Texas opioid crisis, which is a critical threat to the state’s public and fiscal health. Many observers want to hold the pharmaceutical industry responsible for what has become a nationwide epidemic. Physicians, pharmacies, and state Medicaid programs are also taking blame. The Trump administration only very recently declared it as such, despite months of urging by national, state and local public officials who are seeing their public safety, health, and child welfare budgets decimated by opioid abuse.
