Description

President Trump has finally declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency, though federal appropriations for the crisis were not attached to the declaration, apart from, perhaps, an advertising campaign the President has planned. The public health emergency declaration does not offer funds for addiction treatment, which many experts agree is the primary need for ameliorating opioid addiction. In fact, the President focused his public statements about the public health emergency on the advertising campaign he touted as an effective way “to keep kids from trying drugs”, marking his grave misunderstanding of the opioid crisis in this country, which affects teens, adults and aging folks and most often begins with doctor-prescribed drug use for a dental procedure, surgery, or injury. This posting looks more deeply at the Texas crisis from a policy perspective.
